The name "Nissan" was first used in the early 1930s as a Tokyo stock market abbreviation for Nippon Sangyo. The Nissan Motor Company was official born when DAT Motors, the company that first produced DAT Trucks and Datsun passenger vehicles, merged with a Nissan casting company. The company went on to produced airplanes, trucks and engines for the Japanese military, and its primary manufacturing plant was relocated to Japanese-controlled territory in China. Throughout the 1950s, Nissan expanded their automobile market to Europe, Australia and the United States. A key partnership with the Austin Motor Company of the United Kingdom gave Nissan access to Austin patents, and these technologies were used to innovate Nissan's own Datsun models.
