This subsidiary of Harley-Davidson motorcycles was not conceived by Harley itself. An ex-Harley engineer, Erik Buell, designed and built the first Buell motorcycle in Wisconsin. By 1998, Harley had acquired majority ownership of the company and significantly upgraded the Sportster-based engines used in the Buell bikes.

Buell debuted two new models with their 2006 product line, one of which is pictured to the right. The Ulysses was described in press releases as an "Adventure Sportbike" because it was designed for on and offroad use.
